Here's something unique. Duevel introduced the new battery-powered Shuttle Disk CD player (top, $4900). Joining it on the bottom is the new Shuttle integrated amplifier ($5600), which puts out 70Wpc but requires a mains connection.

HighEnd Audio fronted their Duevel setup with both analog and digital, the former compliments of Dutch Pluto turntable fame (due for review by Jules sometime in 05), the latter via Vince Sander's VRS Systems hard-drive server. The omni-dispersion principle of the German speakers made for an exceptionally airy if ultimately slightly soft-focus sound which is the particular hallmark of such designs. Duevel's new battery-powered CD player made its US debut in a silent display [below right].

I really enjoyed the music made by the Duevel Jupiter loudspeakers in the HighEnd Audio room although I can already tell you what my wife will say about them based on their looks. Still, they did a lovely job representing my old Ella Fitzgerald CD after it was loaded into the VRS Systems hard-drive music server. Does this make me guilty of file sharing? The sound wasn't about pinpoint imaging. Instead, it was about a more natural representation of music in the space of a living room (or hotel room, in this case). On "Angel Eyes", the piano smoldered in the background while Ella's voice glowed like a hot ember.

In de ruimte waar ondermeer het top model Jupiter van het Duitse luidsprekermerk Duevel staat te spelen is er weer Nederlands te horen. Ditmaal is het Eddie Driessen van de Pluto draaitafels. En als die eenmaal begint over wat hij nu weer verbeterd of veranderd heeft aan zijn geesteskind, dan heb je een feestje. Een flink contrast wordt gevormd door het feit dat in deze kamer naast met de Pluto ook een VRS systeem aanwezig is. VRS levert een, oneerbiedig gezegd, computer muziek systeem. Een cd (of lp) wordt geladen op de harde schijf van het systeem en via een eigen geluidskaart gaat het signaal naar de versterker. Maar kom hier niet mee aan bij Eddie. Duevel maakt rondstralende hoornluidsprekers die een brede en luchtige afbeelding neerzetten wat even wennen is in het begin.
